A tiny island economy chained to imported oil is no sovereign economy at all, but a hostage with a flag. When the metropolis burns in imperial war, the periphery pays at the pump. Who profits? The tanker owners and financiers. Who suffers? The worker buying bread, bus fare, and fuel.

Here the contradiction is naked. These islands are told to develop, yet their lifeblood arrives by ship, priced by distant conflicts they did not choose. Capital calls this “integration.” I call it dependence dressed as progress. The bourgeoisie exports volatility, then moralises over inflation.

The climate crisis and the oil crisis are twins born of the same rotten parent: fossil capital. One drowns the islands, the other squeezes them. The lesson is simple, if the ruling class can bear simplicity: energy sovereignty, public ownership, and a break with imperial fuel dependence, or perpetual crisis.
